The Girl of Fire and Thorns-- An Awesomely Unexpected Hero

Image from Amazon.com
I'm always on the look out for a book that has a unlikely hero. Well, look no further than Elisa from The Girl of Fire and Thorns. She's a princess, she set to marry a handsome prince... but she's also overweight, socially awkward, a definitely prefers the company of books to that of her soon-to-be much-older husband.

Written by New York Times best seller, Rae Carson, The Girl of Fire and Thorns is full of mystery and adventure. Though she's not very happy about it, Elisa is a chosen one. She bears the "Godstone"-- a holy relic that is part of her own body. Every 100 years someone with a Godstone is born, and they have a mission to complete. Some of these missions are heroic and legendary. Some are tragic and humiliating.

Elisa doesn't know what she's supposed to do with her Godstone, but one thing is for certain-- she must use her unforeseen magic powers to solve some serious conflicts going on in her world.  War seems to loom on the horizon, and Elisa has no idea how she is to prevent it! As she  travels and learns more of her country's current dilemmas, she must face dangerous enemies and reluctantly make allies with those she doesn't trust.

For me, The Girl of Fire and Thorns was a page-turner. I loved the main character for her authentic actions and personality. She wasn't your typical princess, and she was far from a perfect young lady. The book also had a good balance of action, romance, and sadness. Be prepared to be drawn in by Carson's characters-- you love and hate them! Also, there's good news for series-lovers! This book is part of a series!

I give this book 4/5 stars!
